OpenAI Internals: Function Calling / Tools to System Prompts
Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced the ability to call functions. Provided in their docs, is a reference to what is happening behind the scenes.
Under the hood, functions are injected into the system message in a syntax the model has been trained on.
So... how does this actually work? Let's first take their example function.

We can verify this is indeed correct by crafting our own "function calling" system prompt. We unfortunately have to provide a fake tools
object, as it seems OpenAI filters out tools / function calls if tools
is missing from the request object.

If you fiddle around a bit more, you might notice that we are using nearly 2x as many input tokens as before. This is because OpenAI is still injecting their function calling system prompt into our system prompt that already has function calling.
